What does shielding mean? (St), What is Pimf?
In everyday life, from the audio systems we use to robotic arm applications, our cables are exposed to electromagnetic fields. This field, called EMI, causes distortion of the signal passing through the cable and may even lead to system malfunctions. To prevent such issues, shielding systems are used in cables.
Shielding refers to the application of a conductive braid, a conductive foil, or both together onto the cable core. Shielding is done to block electromagnetic effects from the environment on the signals passing through the cable, ensuring healthy signal transmission. Another reason is to eliminate the mutual interference when different cables are located together. The term (St), as defined in the DIN VDE 0815 standard, means Static Protection. Pimf comes from the English phrase Pairs in Metal Foil, meaning that the conductor pairs are covered with metal foil.
